I've tried about every suggestion but to no avail. unable to 'make install' I have the tar, how do you install this? It worked in Mint 11 very easily.

You need to read the How-To get SVN.
What's the output of './configure' ?
What's the output of 'make'?
What's the output of 'sudo make install' ?
