..this seems to make the servers think you're signed in at two places at once, presumably because aMSN doesn't support SSL -
Really  Huh So where's the security in using msn client and checking emails with its hotmail account?

I really don't know what to do. After a small chat with another dev, we decided to give a try to the new msn 18 protocol version. It's not fully implemented, so you won't have emoticons/display pictures/voice clips/audio-video, but you'll be able to do multipresence and login without problems (or at least I hope that).
To switch to P18 go to the main aMsn window and hit Ctrl + S. In the window that will show up write ::config::setKey protocol 18
Then restart aMsn.
Please give me some feedback about that.

Hi there, I just registered so that I could give feedback to this solution. It worked for me, so if any developers read this post I would be glad to know a little more about the problem's nature and why it is resolved this way, as well as what will be the limitations on using protocol 18.

I'm using amsn from now on, so I would also like to give my thanks to the people working on this project!

MSNP18 limits are: no p2p at all. This means no emoticons, no display pictures, no file sending/receiving.
MSNP15 (used actually) is getting buggy because of deprecation. We're trying to port everything to P18, but there's still one element that we need to finish (msnp2pv2).

Since Hotmail has been updated to Outlook webmail, I realized that the problem does not happen anymore. Issue finally fixed?? Pity that skype will soon merge msn..
