Hi,

Firstly gotta say I do love aMSN - so much better than even the official Windows Live Messenger!  The developers and everyone involved should be very proud.

Unfortunately I have been having problems lately signing in which is a slight disappointment.  The situation is this;

Almost every time I try to sign in it just hangs there signing in but almost always never does so.  I have to click cancel and retry a few times until it finally works.

My OS is Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition and I'm using "aMSN 0.98.4 (05/12/2010)".  I sign in as Appear Offline (then may change my status to Online once signed in) and I have saved my username & password so that as I open aMSN all I have to do is click sign in but as said that is where the problem occurs.

All it does is sit there with the 'bar thing' doing it's left-right thing for a number of minutes.  I think I have already tried leaving it for a good few minutes trying to sign in but no luck and I'd have to click Cancel and try again a few more times before it does successfully sign in.  The last time this problem occurred it wasn't until the 3rd or 4th attempt that is successfully signed in.  I do note that this problem has only started since I had the automatic update for this version.

I don't have this problem with WLM when I try to sign in with the same account on there and I also don't have this problem when using emesene (which I use with another account) but I'm pretty sure I have already tried the same account used on aMSN on emesene in the past and if I recall correctly it worked fine so that surely rules out any account-specific issues?

Hopefully someone could help with this as it's getting really annoying now.  I would honestly hate to stop using aMSN...

Many thanks in advance for replies and assistance with this.

Cheers,
Paul.

You're lucky I commited a fix for that problem half an hour ago. You have a slower internet connection, right? The problem is, that aMSN tries to synchronize your contact list while logging in. If you have many contacts and/or the server is slow and/or your connection is slow then it takes veeeery long to login. That problem should be fixed now in the latest SVN version. It's the development version, but it's almost as stable as the stable version. Otherwise you have to wait for the next stable release. Here is a description on how to install the SVN version: http://www.amsn-project.net/wiki/SVN

Thanks for the response above.

I don't really have a slow Internet connection (at least I'm pretty sure it is reasonably fast).  I do have a reasonably large list of contacts but I'm pretty sure it isn't something like over 100.  Never known the server to be slow as this sort of problem doesn't appear in the official Windows Live Messenger - hopefully this problem isn't Microsoft figuring out who is using aMSN and giving them a hard time when they connect and whilst they're connected to their servers and giving them a dodgy connection or something creepy like that.

I have looked into this SVN Version you've mentioned and whilst it does tempt me, the problem I'm having isn't major and a few quick clicks of Cancel and Sign In again normally means it works...or sometimes it signs me in without a problem!

Look forward to the update / release of the version with fix in it - don't suppose you have an idea when that'll be out?

Many thanks.

I just updated to latest svn and it actually broke things for me.

I was able to log in 5 minutes ago, before the latest svn. Now I get: disconencted, logged in other location.

Edit: It's working again now.

I have the same problem, and Im using the latest svn. I've noticed the problem for about a week now, and it seems like it's just getting harder to log in successfully. My connection speed is 10Mbit, don't know if that counts as a slow connection in this case.

UP!!

I've got the same issue! I've try to reinstall it but it didn't work. I've tried the SVN version and it's not better.
In the previous version (before 0.98.4) everything was fine, i can't understand what's wrong...

Help will be appreciated guys, this p*** me off Smiley

Any news/progress about that bug? I was hoping that everything would go back to normal as I don't see any bug(s) in the code, so I asusme that it's because of a server bug.

Could this issue perhaps be related to http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/index.php?topic=8279.0 ?

Hi, i been suffering the same kind of problems from some time ago, i fix the problem going into "preferences", "connection" and changing settings to "http connection mode in 80 port" , tried in 0.98.4 and 0.99b just downloaded a few minutes ago, and work in both versions.

I hope this can help people with same problem, if someone fix this way and can tell us, was a great help Cheesy.

BTW i read another post where people have the same problem with Win 7, maybe can be fixed this way too Smiley.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!.  I just came on to check on any latest update(s) to this and I see your post, so I make the necessary changes and hey presto signing in seems to happen instantly as it once did so long ago.  Lucky really as if such a helpful post wasn't here I was going to fly off in a bit of a rant over how long it is taking to fix/release a fix.

That said, I was initially concerned that changing to that setting may mean the sending/receiving of messages is delayed (a bit like using Messenger on a mobile phone) but through a test with someone it doesn't seem to be a problem, so that's great.

It is however still a shame that the official fix for this appear to have been done but not publicly released via the normal (not the SVN) version - I'd say it's a pretty major bug if you can't sign in easily!

Still, massive thanks to ArkanHell - I don't know where you live but if you are ever in London or planning to come to London then let me know as I owe you a drink!  Smiley
