Since you're using Ubuntu maybe you should use "aplay $sound" or "paplay $sound".
Just a guess... Roll Eyes

me too...I've the same problem
No sound notifications ....sometimes yes...sometimes no....
I've been trying everything....but nothing!!!....

I solved....
I think it was due to the music plugin....
Now it seems to work...
