Hi, i use aMSN on my mac powerbook G4 (intel). I was moving my main contact list window and somehow the top portion of it got 'under' the mac's main menu bar at the top.  As is, I cannot minimize the main contact list window window or even reposition it. It is now stuck at the left hand corner of my screen. I've tried  restarting aMSN but the main contact list window appears at the same position.  Please help.  thank you.

edit the file / Home / Library / Application Support / aMSN / your_profile_email / config.xml
find the line that says something like this :
Code:
  <entry>
      <attribute>wingeometry</attribute>
      <value>449x654+566+0</value>
   </entry>

(search for geometry)
replace the value by anything else that you find acceptable (the format is width x height + x position + y position )

do you know how other applications avoid this issue ?
isn't there some way to move the application without the top border ? like alt-click or ctrl-click or something ?

@tomhennigan : maybe a check on load_config to make sure the positions are valid on mac ?

OS X offers no way of moving a window where you can't get it back - if it got there it's because aMSN put it there somehow. also usually OS X windows refuse to go out of screen IIRC, it is perhaps a tk bug

don't know.. but I know that OS X is stupid if it does that :p
in linux, you would have mouse+keyb  bindings to move a window (alt+left click+mouse) and in windows, if it happens, if you click on some part of the window to resize it, it moves it back to show a small part of the top window, or you could right click the taskbar and do a move...

hey guys thanks for help.  I tried to go to config, but couldnt' locate the appropriate 'geometry' tab. I am now trying to find a shortcut key for me to  minimize my window or resize it, since i cannot access with the mouse the top bar of the contact list window.

For others who can help, i've attached a picture of what my problem is.

This is highly infuriating!

Cheers,

On my computer the path was rather
/Home/Library/Application Support/amsn/config.xml

open in a text editor and search for 'wingeometry'

i think you misunderstood me, what i said is that OS X forbids windows to be off-screen unless some library programmatically insists on putting it there. a user has no mean of putting a window off-screen. therefore it is not the user that placed the window there, but aMSn that moved it so. I just opened aMSN and tried placing the window as he described - iwas not able, OS X forbid me to do it (the window wouldn't move any further upon being close to getting off-screen, it alo refused to get under the menu bar) therefore for some reason aMSN suddenly decided to move to window there programmatically, i have no idea why

yes it happened to me, you just can't do it yourself however, if you try to move the window offscreen it doesan't let you do it, it happens becasue aMSN does it for some reason

So what are the steps to reproduce it?

@isobront, try doing Ctrl-Shift-C from the main window and type :
Code:
wm geometry . +0+0

it should restore its position to the top left of the screen.

oh god kakaroto, you're a genius! your solution totally worked! i did as you said, but the coordinates +0+0 is where my window was locked, so that didn't work, so i improvised and just entered +10+10, and it shifted down my contact list window down slightly such that the top bar of my contact list window was no longer 'blocekd' by the main OS' tool bar, then i resized the window...and voila! thanks so much.

eternally grateful,
isobront

p.s. so strange how my window got there in the first place.

pps.  thanks everyone for pitching in, really appreciate this...my faith in forums has been restored!
