Hello Folks, Smiley
I would like to introduce myself to you.

My Personal Info:
Name: George Saadé
Date of Birth: 18/2/1992
Nationality: Lebanese
Physical Condition: Eyes.

The reason I registered in these forums:
The main reason I've register here is to MOSTLY help develevlop this wonderful clone,
by suggesting many stuff to be improved/implemented Cheesy. I hope I enjoy my time over
here much as I enjoy other forums, and I hope EVERYONE is kind over here! Wink

My description/thaughts about aMSN:
Well, aMSN is a WONDERFUL clone of the famour IM client, Windows Messenger/MSN
Messenger/Windows Live Messenger, which is not developped by Microsoft Tongue and serves
what people want to have in their aMSN! Thaugh still aMSN still NEEDS much improvements
Truely this is the BEST clone I saw yet (even better than dMSN Tongue), I encourage everyone
who doesnt have it, to download it as fast as he/she can...

What must be improved/implemented:
  • The ability to have 'Detailed' and 'Normal' ContactList viewing (like in WLM)
  • The ability to navigate between contact list and groups (If group opened, when
pressing the left arrow key must close it)
  • The ability to search the contact list for a specific contact (by nickname and e-mail)
  • The ability to open the 'Contact Card' of other contacts when clicking once on their DPs
  • The ability to start recording a sound when pressing 'F2'
  • Option to choose between "Automattically Show the OIMs at the moment I login to
my e-mail" and "Show conversation icon in the 'ContactList Dashboard', and when
clicked displays the OIMs"
  • Improving the 'Login interface' to look like the WLM one
  • The ability to see the "(Online)" and "(Offline)" while contacts are online and/or
offline, and the status icons, while viewing thumbnailed DPs
  • Dynamic Display Pictures support (If possible)
  • Background support (for skins)
  • The abilty to import '.dll' and '.plsc' scripts (for plugins)
  • Clone the famouse add-on for MSN Messenger, Messenger Plus! [Live], with all [well,
most of] it's features, commands and tags.
  • Commands like "!imitate" ,"!fakeapp", "!action" (Contact the creator of "MDL" for the
"!imitate" and "!fakeapp" commands, and contact the "Messenger Fusion" addon for
    the "!action" command)
  • The ability to check if someone blocked us (Don't worry not block-checker, just use the way msgweb.nl connect to the server and checks the contact's status!)
  • The ability of knowing if someone is 'Apearing Offline''
  • The ability to leave a small message when adding a contact of aMSN user (The message will appear in the window that asks you if you want to add the contact or not)
  • The support of "What I'm Listening To" for WMP and Real Player (If possible)
  • The ability of having the Sharing Folder feature in WLM (If WLM is installed)
Questions:
  • What is SVN?
  • How to download and install ASpell? (so I could use the spell checker plugin)
  • How to open 2 e-mails at once using a MSN?
  • What are the names of the icon(s) that appear in the system tray in the "pixmaps" folder?
Thank you for reading, ad I hope you'll be kind and reply to my post. Smiley
Have a nice day!

  • have enough time/willing/developpers to code all that !
Quote from: "gjs1992"

  • What is SVN?

Subversion, also known as SVN is a tool that keeps track of all work and all changes in a set of files. We use it for all files related to amsn's development. It allows several (potentially widely separated) developers to collaborate. But you can also benefit from that technology to get the latest development version of aMSN.

Quote from: "gjs1992"

  • How to open 2 e-mails at once using a MSN?

Open amsn 2 times.

1 -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion
http://www.amsn-project.net/wiki/index.php/SVN

2 - google for aspell, go to their website, download it, install it

3 - if on windows or linux, open amsn twice, if on mac, search in the mac forums, it's been answered (duplicate the file)

4 - if on windows, it's in the winicons directory iirc, for linux, not sure.

I'll read the rest of your post and reply later, sorry for being rude, I have to go.

I think I got you, but I don't agree Wink In this case (one aMSN with multiple accounts), you won't be able to manage your both states/nicks/mails/... as easily as you can't do now. What's more, I guess no one have so much accounts that having a few icons in its task bar can be really annoying.

Hi again, I'll answer you more in depth now...

Quote from: "gjs1992"
What must be improved/implemented:
  • The ability to have 'Detailed' and 'Normal' ContactList viewing (like in WLM)
What's that "Detailed" view you're talking about? I can't see anything like that anywhere... maybe you should look at our 'custom nickname' in the properties window of a contact or the 'global custom nickname' feature
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability to navigate between contact list and groups (If group opened, when
pressing the left arrow key must close it)

not an issue, this is not necessary at all, also, the way it is currently coded does not allow us to do this. Even if we accept this, it's a very low priority thing which will probably never be done
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability to search the contact list for a specific contact (by nickname and e-mail)
true, that would be usefull..
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability to open the 'Contact Card' of other contacts when clicking once on their DPs
You should search the forum before asking, this is a well requested feature and the protocol part of it is already done in the latest SVN version.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability to start recording a sound when pressing 'F2'
No, I don't want this, simply because of the complications that might follow. If you hold F2, then use the mouse to switch to another window, we need to keep track of which window the recording is going to be sent to, I don't want to work on something like that as it will probably bring us many new bugs. Also, this is really not a critical issue
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • Option to choose between "Automattically Show the OIMs at the moment I login to
my e-mail" and "Show conversation icon in the 'ContactList Dashboard', and when
clicked displays the OIMs"

I don't get it. I understand the 'show OIM' thing, but I don't think that popup is annoying. It also allows the user to know that those msgs were OIMs.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • Improving the 'Login interface' to look like the WLM one
"Improve the login interface to look like the WLM one" -> NO
"Improve the login interface so that it looks nicer" -> YES
Work is already in progress and you can see some mockups here : http://amsn.sourceforge.net/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=GUI+Team+Sandbox
Apart from that, we do not accept any "improve the GUI" complaints.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability to see the "(Online)" and "(Offline)" while contacts are online and/or
offline, and the status icons, while viewing thumbnailed DPs

yeah would be nice, but not going to be done any time soon.. the new contact list window is being worked on and I'm trying to push it forward, we'll see what happens then. It should allow such a thing.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • Dynamic Display Pictures support (If possible)
Not possible. First, it's a 'cab' file that contains the dynamic display picture, this means a compressed archive format proprietary to microsoft. secondly, the dynamic display picture is not a GIF file, it's a SWF file (flash animation) and currently there is no good free, open source, GPL, easy to bundle library for flash. finally, the DDP must be signed by the Microsoft website or they will not work, and of course, it's impossible to replicate that signature.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • Background support (for skins)
read the forums. it's impossible
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The abilty to import '.dll' and '.plsc' scripts (for plugins)
Huh? no!!!! first, amsn works on windows, yes, but its first aim was to be an alternative for linux users, so .dll doesn't even apply to linux or mac users.. also, what about security.. and what do you mean by import a dll ? any dll ? so what ? you just can't import a non tcl/tk extension dll, that's the language's limitation. But if you really want to create a windows only plugin, then do it and code it all in C, compile it into a tcl/tk extension dll, then in your plugin's tcl code, just do a 'load my.dll' to load the dll, then register your functions to call the dll's functions. read more about plugins and about tcl/tk before asking those questions.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • Clone the famouse add-on for MSN Messenger, Messenger Plus! [Live], with all [well,
most of] it's features, commands and tags.
  • Commands like "!imitate" ,"!fakeapp", "!action" (Contact the creator of "MDL" for the
"!imitate" and "!fakeapp" commands, and contact the "Messenger Fusion" addon for
    the "!action" command)
There IS a "amsn plus!" plugin.. but it is VERY buggy and we do not recommend it.. also, MSN plus is a plugin to enhance a crappy client like msn messenger. I think amsn itself is so much more powerfull than msn messenger that it doesn't need a "plus!" amsn itself is already 'plus'... about the commands ,it's just a matter of being used to it, you'll get used to amsn too. It offers you SO MUCH more than what msn plus! ever did. And I think that most (if not all) of msn plus!'s features are all useless and eye candy and not add bloatness to the application while amsn should stay clear of all that and be only a 'good messenger with functionality'. "!imitate" ? why? "!fakeapp" ? what's that? look a bit at what plugins we already have, you have the color changer, the invisibility, try pressing ctrl-alt-space from amsn's windows, etc... you don't need that.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability to check if someone blocked us (Don't worry not block-checker, just use the way msgweb.nl connect to the server and checks the contact's status!)
FOR THE LAST TIME OF MY F*CKING LIFE, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BLOCK CHECKER IN AMSN EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability of knowing if someone is 'Apearing Offline''
READ THE DAMN FORUMS
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability to leave a small message when adding a contact of aMSN user (The message will appear in the window that asks you if you want to add the contact or not)
what the... ? why? if the guy connects, talk to him! if you want to say something to not forget it, then add a note on the user, if you really want to send him a message, then add an alarm on him and send it, if you want him to receive it anytime, add him then send an OIM....
This is just useless Microsoft crap.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The support of "What I'm Listening To" for WMP and Real Player (If possible)
This is done through a plugin. And use a real player for once, winamp for example. the WMP possibility is being investigated, but this is part of a plugin, not in the core.
Quote from: "gjs1992"
  • The ability of having the Sharing Folder feature in WLM (If WLM is installed)

for the last time, read the damn forums, it's been answered thousands of times.. this is just a waste of my time! you want me to keep answering people the same old questions for hours every day or you want me to code instead ?

Quote from: "gjs1992"
Quote from: "LunaDiCristallo"

Something more?? lol

Yes there are, must I really post them _ALL_ here?

Well if you think there's _A LOT_ more to add, then, please don't say anything. You say you like the software, but you kept complaining, this is the first time I see this, all these requests, and none of them are valid. You don't want an alternate IM client, you seem to like WLM and you want WLM without the 'microsoft' name. Sorry, but we *are* a clone, but we are not M$, our moto is "better than WLM" if we copy it then we'll be as ugly and bloated as WLM.

no need for it, you won't open 100 accounts, it's easier to manage like this, also the design was never meant for something like that. You have a solution, why say "not good", at least, you could have said "I would have prefered..."

Well, I know where the ASpell website is located but the problem is HOW TO download and install?

Well, this is http://www.amsn-project.net/forums right ? it's not http://www.aspell-project.net/forums ? First, it is said that all plugins are the responsability of their author, if we are responsable for this plugin then we would have put that code in the core instead, no ? so if you want to ask, ask the author, but I'd advice you not to, because the author is not called "public information boot", he's a person, and he doesn't need to waste HIS time while you could open google and type "install aspell". Many users installed it, and none of them every complained about not knowing how to do it. If you don't know something so simple, I wonder how you were able to boot your machine....

talk to me? about what ? why? I don't get it? if you have something to say, then say it out loud in public. My email is private and I do not share it with anyone. Do not send me a PM through the forums either as I never read them, I only accept PMs when I explicitely authorized a user to send me one. I could authorize you but then you'll have to tell me the reason (only accepted reasons are if you want to send private information like your password or contact list information in order for me to help fix a bug you get).

Hey George,
Don't take it personal, I didn't say anything to offend you, but yes, I'd need to calm down, I was really calm at first, but you kept coming with useless ideas and I realized I was just wasting my time.

1) I know, I never said anything about that

2) it's in the 'important - read first', so you should have known

3) I'm not saying you don't know how to search, I'm saying that you didn't take the time to do it. If you didn't want others to do it for you, then you would have done it first, it's like saying "how come there's no bread on the table" instead of standing up and going to the kitchen to get the bread... I know, I have bad analogies but I like them. what I mean is that you ask a question expecting an answer but you should search first before asking the question. "what is SVN", if you googled for it, you would have found it. It's something I'm telling you for the future, get that habbit, it will ease a lot of things for you.

4) that looks like irony, I hate irony... my behavior was normal, I was just answering you according to what you made me feel with your posts and suggestions. I won't do you the irony and say thank you for all the things you wrote.

5) no, that's not it, AT ALL. On the contrary, I think Microsoft has VERY GOOD ideas (although most of them are stolen from other softwares), and I like most of their products (not all) especially the latest versions of their products. But what I'm saying is that if it's a completly useless feature in WLM, we shouldn't reproduce it in aMSN. If we did everything M$ did, we would have lost half of our user base, just search the forums and you'll get how people feel. There was a huge debate over the display picture (DP) in the chat window, do we want one display picture in the bottom (like amsn now) or two display pictures, yours in the bottom and your friend's at the top. I'd say when we said we'll do it with 2 DP, 90% of our users started complaining that "nooooooo, it is too bloated, it will take too much space, it's useless, we already know our own DP so no need to show it", etc... then we were kind of forced (although some of us liked the idea too) to do the 1 DP only. Now.. a year later, we get a lot more users requesting to have 2 DP in the chat window, so we can't please everyone with amsn, and we rejected the idea of adding the possibility of both solutions with a new option for 1 reason : aMSN has already too many options and if we add more, the users will get lost in configuring amsn, it will become too bloated again, kind of like WLM. So, even if it took longer and more work, we still implemented it but as a plugin. So those who want it can download and install the plugin, those who don't will keep the default setting. This also allowed amsn to STAY CLEAN, to avoid being bloated.
Now, I hated the idea of 2 DP, but once I got the plugin working, I liked the feel of it, and now I'm using it.
What I mean with all that is that when it's a useful thing, we will do it, when it's not, then we have no reason to do it. Imagine amsn with all the features of WLM and the features of amsn, what will it become ? just a huge load of impossible to use software. (actually many people even requested a minimalistic version of aMSN and if you want, you can read this thread http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1182465&forum_id=180131 and look at this screenshot (yes, it is aMSN) : http://kakaroto.homelinux.net/amsn_compact.png). So adding features is good yes, but only when it's useful.

6) wtf? who ever said I thought amsn is the best whatever? I never said that and I know it's still in development, and noone is better placed than me to judge that, I know all of amsn bugs and all of the things it lacks and all its limitations, so what you're saying has no meaning since I never said or thought something like that, and about respect, yeah, who said the opposite ? AFAIK (As Far As I Know) noone did anything to loose your respect, nor to gain it either by the way...

7) who said you're a fool? I said that you can have many interesting things with plugins and that some of msn plus! features are in plugins and that we don't need to do anything in core to emulate msn plus! and btw, if you saw every plugin why are you asking for amsn to support msn plus! commands ? you should have known the amsn plus! plugin was available...

Cool Thanks, I just hope it's not irony this day.

Anyways, have a nice day too.

p.s: Isn't it 10AM in lebanon ? why wake up so early if you don't have school.. if you have school, why are you posting insead of studying :p
p.p.s: yeah, I'm lazy and I love to sleep...

and I'm not that lazy really, I usually wake up 6:30 AM!

And to tell you, Why should I use aMSN Plus! plugin if it's buggy? I've saw it's read me and stuff, but still it doesn't FULLY serve what Messenger Plus! [Live] serves, nice work Kakaroto!
And I would like to tell you why I wanted to contact/PM you, it's because I want(ed) to be your friend <3 and help you out with suggestions (I learned my lesson, and no, not suggestions coming from WLM Tongue), so we could me, you and the developpers get this program to hit it's maximum possibilities! Cheesy

Have a lovely day! Cool

Quick reply: the suggested features are (in my opinion) not necessary, there are more "urgent" matters (like new(er) msn protocol, voice chat,...)

Anyway, kakaroto said something about being bloated or not.
If we take a look at "Messenger Live", it IS bloated. The biggest drawback is that the user has NOTHING to configure there.
If we take then a look at aMSN, the user has more options to configure things (e.g. display aMSN banner,...).

Personally, I would like to see an IM that is build kinda like FireFox. You get a basic IM, and everything else (like custom emoticons, webcam, DP's,...) is an extension.
In this way, every user can "build" his own IM and making it as bloated as he wishes.

May be it is an idea to shift the "being bloated or not"-issue to the user.
Rebuild to Preferences menu, so all the configuration-options are better grouped.

MSN Live has some advantages (mainly because they use the latest protocol), but what I LOVE about aMSN, is it's ability to configure things.

I know this will not be done in aMSN1, but maybe it is an idea to consider in aMSN2 (the "build your own IM" idea) ?

@WM : yeah, we know that already, which is why we created the plugins system. And we originally wanted to have everything there (even the file transfers feature would have been a plugin).
About configuration, that was always my aim. But then we got to the point where we became too configurable, so we kind of stopped adding new options..

@gjs : UAE, ah ok... but 6:30??? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I could never do that... not even if my life was threatened :p
about amsn plus! it is buggy and not recommended, but if you really want the features, you could still use it, many people do and it works out fine for them, they just know that if a bug happens they shouldn't report it. I'm not the one who coded that plugin (if it was me, it would have been bugfree (H)) so no need to say nice work.
About contacting me, it's not necessary, as I said, because I only have in my list people that I know irl (in real life), so my amsn has maybe 20 contacts in it, and I don't want to change that habbit.
If you want to participate and share with the developers, you can subscribe to the amsn-devel@lists.sourceforge.net mailing list, go the sourceforge project page, then mailing list, then subscribe.
You can send a mail (short) to say that you just joined the list and say hi to everyone, try not to send any forwards or off topic emails. never send suggestions or bug reports to the list. What you can do is share your opinions on already opened subjects, after a few months, you'll get used to how the list works and you should be able to judge what to send and what not to.
We still receive emails about suggestions or bug reports on thelist, and we simply automatically answer :

hope this helps.
