Well I read the FAQ so this is more of a clarification rather than me asking if there is going to be audio support....

Quote
Q: Why doesn't aMSN support audio / Why did aMSN drop linphone support?
A:

    * The support of Linphone in aMSN has been dropped some time ago because it was not complete and difficult to maintain. Moreover, the only person able to make it work and to resume its development is no more active in the aMSN's development, so the support has just been dropped.
    * Now aMSN supports webcam session (not videconference), this support is complete and stable and easier to maintain.
    * About Audio support, it is delayed for a next release. Farsight project, developped by Burgerman will give audio support to aMSN, we are just waiting for a stable version.

Really happy to hear that there is going to be audio support as its one of the few things which makes me switch to windows :/ a lot of people like to voice chat and i can't make them download skype.

One question? Will the audio support my cross-platform (I think thats what its called total noob here) as in linux to windows?

Hi adises...
Thanks for pointing this out, indeed, we need to update the FAQ (but only once 0.97 will be out). I will clarify this to you, although it has been answered multiple times already and you should have searched the forum before posting since it is one of the forum's rules...
1 - the audio conversations are not supported by amsn because there is no code for it and there is no good library implementing this
2 - the codec needed for encoding and decoding the voice is proprietary to microsoft and is not known by anyone (apart from me.. see below) and we can't implement it until someone reverse engineers the codec which is a lengthy process that noone wants to do...
3 - anything we do for amsn is always multi-platform, so don't worry about that..
4 - in the latest SVN version, I recently implemented the support for sending audio, but not in a voice conversations, but rather as voice clips (max 15 seconds each).
5 - with the current reverse engineering done, you can only send voices, not receive them, but that should be fixed sometime in the future...
6 - for anything else, search the whole forum before posting as I'm sure it's been answered already.

No, Kopete does not support MSN voice chat. It supports Skype voice chat as an unoffical plugin. Kopete probably won't have MSN VC any time soon because it's a multi-protcol app, whereas aMSN already has a large number of MSN Messenger's features, so it'll probably be the first to have it... whenever FarSight gets done... maybe KKT's work with the voice clips will be helpful to them.

someone is working on an implementation of the SIP protocol used for voice chat, and the codec that will be used is the one used by MSN for the voice clips (yes, there is support for that codec in a voice chat too) so once that guy finishes his library and once I finish the encoder part of the codec, we should be the first ones to implement voice chat correctly Smiley

Whoa, really? How long you figure that will take? Probably version 0.97, eh?

Also, am I correct in assuming that the next version the homepage talks about will have voice clip stuff and everything else that's currently in the SVN?

Hi,
The full bidirectional voice clip support and audio conversation will be done someday, but we just don't know when... probably it will be for 0.97... my guess is that sending and receiving voice clips will be in 0.97, but audio conversation.. I can't tell, it all depends on the guy implementing it...  but there's a big probability that it will be available for 0.97
The SVN version is currently the projected 0.97 version. The current stable version is 0.95 and the next version that will be out next week and that we've announced in the website is the 0.96 release, which is a much much more stable version than 0.95 and it has the MSNP12 protocol (allowing the PSM), etc.. but no voice clip feature and no offline messaging feature, as these two feature are wayyyy too new and buggy and incomplete to be included in the next 0.96 release.
If you want to have voice clip support, I suggest you use the SVN version, it is stable enough for everyday's use, but if you find a bug, don't complain about it because we probably know... if you find a bug and it hasn't been fixed for a week, then you can complain about it..
also, avoid complaining about a feature that is relatively new and experimental (like offline messaging and voice clips) unless you want to provide feedback, in which case you can do it, but in a nice way Smiley

Alrighty, thanks for the info ^_^

I dunno if I will get the SVN or not.. I'll probably give it a shot when recieveing is also implemented for voice clips. I have to admit, though, that Linux's sound systems still confuse me to some degree; I can never hear sound in two programs at once, so aMSN's alerts don't go off if I'm playing music. I have never tried voice chatting in Linux before (via Skype) nor have I recorded any audio, but it will probably require some configuration.

well, if you use alsa and configure it correctly, I think it will work, you can use a sound daemon, arts or esd, and it should work, but you'll need to configure amsn to use those too, by calling esdplay or artsplay.. or something.. I'm not sure either :p

SVN version 7848 now has full support of voice clips (sending and receiving), and I got news about the voice conversation feature, it might be doable and easier than we thought, I'll keep you posted.
