Hi All,
I have a problem with SNV snapshot of amsn. I checked in "Preferences" the option: "Flicker chat window title when new message is received on unfocused window"; the troble is that this usefull option does not work for me, while with amsn 0.95 do. Is there someone with the same problem?
thanks. Smiley

1) Which window manager are you using?

2) Try performing a 'make distclean' and then again ./configure and make

if what vivia said didn't work, delete the utils/linux/linflash/flash.so file, it seems to be a bug with your window manager, maybe you should update to the latest...
vivia : you think a 'first time configuration wizard' would be nice ? testing the flash, if user clicks on "I see nothing", then disable it ? a 0.97 thing of course...

Smells good and quite easy to implement, but I haven't seen it in other software! Wouldn't it be a little bit ridiculous? Then again, why search which WM has which bug and include 100 workarounds? Isn't it more ridiculous when you look at the code? Tongue Anyway, I don't know, better bring this to amsn-devel...

Well, I've seen many 'first time config wizard' in many programs (real player, azureus, msn plus!, trillian, etc..), and about 'does it work', you can see it with the sound, microphone and webcam configuration wizards for example.. and it would only be for linux users (which are probably already used to have many weird behaviors from programs and know how configuration is difficult), and the message would be :
Quote

aMSN now supports a new incredible feature : The window flashes in the taskbar when you receive a new message!
Unfortunately, some versions of some window managers seem to have a bug which makes it not work and we have no way to determine if the correct behavior is happening on your machine or not.
After you click Next, a window will appear and you should see the taskbar flash.

Next...

Did you see that window flash ?
If no, then it means your Window Manager has the bug, and we will use an alternate way of notifying you when someone writes you a message

In any case, even if we don't make it a wizard, the least we could do is have an advanced option to disable it, it's better than telling people to 'delete a library from your installation'...
what do you think ?
could you tell amsn-devel about this ?

ops....I deleted flash.so from amsn source directory, while I had to delete it from amsn work dir (/usr/share/amsn/utils/linux/linflash), so now......it works like a charm!!!!!! Smiley
a question: what is this "linflash", except something that causes such problems? Smiley

many many thanks

erter : linflash makes the window in the taskbar flash, not like we do it in amsn by switching the title from its real title to "New message", but it actually flashes from one color to another (kind of like a tab flashes.. the same as flashing in M$ Windows.. ). For it to work, your WM needs to support it, yours not only doesn't support it but it also claims to be supporting it, so linflash thinks it worked, while it didn't...
it should work with xfce, I think you need the latest version of it though...  (or was it that they fixed the bug in the latest version but it still doesn't flash?)
anyways, you should have understood all that if you read my message above...

I use XFCE 4.3.90.1 (Beta #1 for 4.4) and for me it doesn't flash either, I assume there's still a bug in XFCE though since aMSN does flash in other WMs. I do hope it'll get fixed, now I have to delete that file every time I update from SVN.

xfce4 4.2.3.2 is the lastest stable version...now I have no time to try the last beta version (exams! Sad)
thanks for the explanation  Smiley

heavyjoost.. the file isn't in SVN.. you must compile it yourself, so you don't need to delete it eveytime you update SVN (you don't need to recompile unless you see a .c or a .h file modified while you 'svn update'.. if only tcl files (or images) are modified, you don't need to recompile).

Yeah I know, that's not really what I meant Wink. I meant that if I recompile, it recompiles the linflash too and so before installing it, I have to delete the .so file first.
Btw, I updated some of my XFCE to revision 22210 (from the svn) and it still doesn't flash. So anyone who wanted to see if the latest builds of XFCE did work, well, it doesn't.. yet xD
