Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: sabit ertan on September 18, 2009, 11:25:05 pm
Hi everyone,
Why amsn web site havent multilanguage support. I am from Turkey and people like amsn but when i try to them use amsn they worried because of website in English. They think it is small project because of website has only one language. If there any chance we can translate web site to other language and people will be happy.

beslama! welcome to the forums!
The website was supposed to be multilangual but we didn't get time to do that and we eventually dropped it simply because we don't really have time to manage a multilangual website, nor do we have time to finish writing the changes to it...
The website's source code is available in SVN (http://amsn.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/amsn/trunk/www ) and you could download it, put it on your local website and improve it to become multilangual... You would be missing the text itself since it's in a database (not accessible for non-admins) but if you could at least work out the php code to make it multilangual, we could give it a try!
Thanks.

Cool! Thanks!
If you see SQL code that tries to get text from a database, try to change the code so it fetches with something like "AND lang=en" (where 'en' would be the language in the GET/POST request).. and make sure you escape it to avoid SQL injection!

Hello,

As I see on the svn, the website is already (at minima) translated for a part : a fonction trans('id') is called in many pages.
Is it a mailing list where the actual developper can be joined, in order to don't create again the wheel?

Or are all the website developpers dead ? ;-)

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: kakaroto on September 22, 2009, 08:09:31 pm
hehe, well the website developers aren't dead (hopefully!) but they're not available anymore, so basically, we have no website developer...
You can discuss anything about amsn development (and this issue) in the amsn-devel mailing list. You need to subscribe first before posting (low traffic) : https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/amsn-devel
And yes, the website originally was planned, designed and developed for french and spanish, and the original beta of the website was like that, but then we drop the language bar (there's a commented line in includes/side-panel.php for including side-panel-language.php) because we didn't/couldn't/wouldn't maintain multiple languages and because the translation stuff was incomplete and we wanted to launch the website officially as soon as possible... but we never got around to finishing the localization work and reenabling the multilanguage stuff..

i have started to seperate all-in-php codes to pure-php and pure-html(with smarty) also tried "define" php function for adding and easily customizable new language file(like in oscommerce). but this going slow :(. I think I will done it about 2-3 weeks

cool, thanks for letting us know how it goes, and don't worry take your time, we've had a single language for years, so we're really not in a hurry :)

Hi there finally Defining all text is done!. What after?
1. Adding all text to right definitions.
2. Start good translation.
3. share defined english.php here to people translate it to their languages(if anyone interest)
3. (if i can) seperating all codes with smarty

Just one thing, i wanted to download the file to do the french translation, but i cant, the second link you gave just redirects me to http://my-php.net/notify/2.php

Hi arantes,
using this link from http://yavhehe.byethost16.com/
worked for me (there it's 'aMSN site with new language')
(probably byethost16 doesn't want to provide download-able files for other pages)

Post by: sabit ertan on October 04, 2009, 08:28:35 pm
Thanks to arantes and BW,it is my fault, yavhehe.byethost is a free account and doesn't able to download using other pages. if you want to add new language please use iso code for file name(for example French, fr.php) and save file with UTF_8 standart.

Hey sabit ertan, excellent work! That's really awesome!
I'll download the code later today (or tomorrow) and review your changes and upload to SVN..
By the way, one small thing I noticed is that when you go to downloads and click 'linux' the language switches back to english.. maybe you should have some type of cookie or a variable in the POST rather than the &lang= in the URL, this way it won't be lost and will require minimal changes (instead of modifying every little link in the code, even for skin/plugin screenshots, or whatever) to have that '&lang' in it..
also, you may need a solution for the 'Download aMSN' buttons, they are images right? We could either have a php file generate those images (like we generate the images for the poll results) or we could have a download-en.png download-tr.png etc...
Apart from that, great job!

Thanks kakaroto, i will try your advice when i finished translation(its about %40). and thanks kakaroto again i forgot linux-down page for defining. I add new definitions to en.php for linux-down page(added editing files to amsn.tar.gz in previous post). (and i know it is out of topic but i looking forward to stable 0.98 :), i wish i knew other programming languages to help developing aMSN:()

hi folks, i got new news(what a bad sentence :) )
ok, the translation to turkish going good(about%80), and more important things is i changed calling every page with ?lang= to cookies based calling(as kakaroto said)(already posted amsn.tar.gz also updated ). have a look  and check your cookie
cookie based amsn site (http://yavhehe.byethost16.com/amsn/)
have to do: solve images changing for each language(maybe use file based or use gd library or css)

Indeed it is hard ... and long ... VERY long ^^

Here is the new version with some corrections. I think everything is right now.

PS : the HELP side panel isn't looking very good in french, due to the " : " being alone on the last line ^^, isn't there a way of changing that ?

EDIT : Here is a MU link since the other one seems not to work for some people : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WDZ0DTGI

Thanks again for an awesome and difficult job well achieved!

There's just a tiny detail i don't like in the new website, it's the fact that when you put the mouse over the menu bar, it "expands" a little bit. You understand what i mean ?

EDIT : And i just saw that when reloading the page, the banner at the top changes Oo I don't think it's a very good idea neither ..
EDIT 2 : I don't like at all the amsn4.jpg logo ... I love the 2 and the 6 ^^ The 9 is fine too.

note: i downloaded you new translation file but i think you forgot save with utf-8(because French alphabet character gone some weird)

Actually i didn't touch anything about the encoding. I don't know why the first would have worked fine and not the second ... anyway, notepad++ told me it was ansi, I converted it in UTF-8, and here it is : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IWIHWOI7

Hi everyone again, here is new idea for plugins and skins description. I use xml files to make translation easy. (i only used it for desc and platform, other things(id,screenshot, url etc.) still coming from mysql). have a look(and dont forget to click other languages):

xml used page for multilingual plugins description (http://yavhehe.byethost16.com/amsn/plugins_xml.php?lang=tr)
if you like it i can write a xml file for all plugins and skins.(or kakaroto(or other admins) can send tables here (only plugins and skins in xml format) from their database :))so we can make fully translatable and easy to edit language files.

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: kakaroto on October 15, 2009, 09:36:17 am
humm.. storing the plugins in a xml file instead of the database.. I'm not sure about that.. I think with the DB it will take ALOT less time to access the data, so it's better to keep it there.. try to contact me on IRC, and i'll see what I can do with regards to the database.. probably have a new system for translations of stuff in the database (like news also for example).
I was thinking of just adding a 'lang' column and show the data that corresponds to the right language.. it's fine for the news items, but for skins/plugins, you don't want to miss untranslated skins/plugins.. anyways, we should discuss this on IRC or whatever, and i'll try to get you a backup of the database.
channel #amsn on irc.freenode.net
by the way, could you update the amsn-www tarball so I can check the diff and commit it ? Also, how far are you from completion ?

hi, i listened LePhilousophe   and i add new columns to sql. finally i wrote a php script for adding new language easily(addnewlang.php). for now there is three files for each language: languages definitions php(example for french:fr.php ) for text in php files and the others are   skins.xml and plugins.xml anyone can edit this files and an admin can add new language to site and mysql by using addnewlang.php.(website doesnt require xml file its just use adding translated part to mysql)
to do:
1. adding translatable news and pool section(both mysql and xml files(also adding codes to addnewlanguage.php))
2. making gui for addnewlanguage.php(i think it will be in admin/index.php)
3. share translatable files here
4. make good translation for my language(Turkish) :)

oh cool! so you use an xml file and your php script imports the language translations into the database, right ? I think that's the best solution, good job on designing that! :)
Keep up the good work :)

Hi, I can traslate to Spanish if needed.

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: kakaroto on October 28, 2009, 03:33:00 am
Hi rubioxtu, thanks, we'll appreciate spanish translation! Keep monitoring this thread, we'll contact you very very soon for help!
@sabit_ertan: Ok, I finally had some time (not really, but I just will sleep less..) to have a look at your code... and I've modified a few things.. mainly to make the code cleaner... for example, I hated seeing :
Code:
<?php echo '<br/><br/><li><ul><blablabla><a uri=http&#58;//foo.bar>'._SOME_TRANS.'</a></ul></li><etc>'?>

I prefered :
Code:
<br/><br/><li><ul><blablabla><a uri=http://foo.bar><?php echo _SOME_TRANS?> </a></ul></li><etc>

Also, there were a lot of places where you forgot to put the semicolon at the end of the echo.
also the libs/cookies.php was not indented at all!!! So I indented it correctly...
I also removed the code that you had added but commented because it was useless.. if it's unused and useless, remove it!
Anyways, after lots of work, I've got a 'cleaner' version of the code. You can get it from http://amsn-project.net/~kakaroto/amsn-www.tar.gz
Please use that version for any additional work, this way we avoid having two branches of the code... and I won't have to re-read the whole thing again to see what you changed...

Also note that I didn't really finish everything from it, so I just took some personal notes, but I think you will find them interesting. You'll find them here : http://www.amsn-project.net/~kakaroto/www/todo
Right now, this is the notes I have :
Quote
check mysql_session.inc.php change, why add that ?
change includes/side-panel-polls.php (see solution below)
n includes/side-panel-polls.php fix typo it's POLL and not POOL
change includes/news.php (see solution below)
in includes/news.php, what does strftime do and why replace date ? can it respect the locale for date conversion?
maybe clean translations.php.. list of items should be a single multiline translation that gets auto-unrolled with <li>$line</line>
try to avoid having html <tags> in translated data as much as possible (but not necessarily completely remove it)
verify all the changes to stylesheet.css, what are all those changes, what do they do and why were they added?
update developer list
remove donation page
check admin stuff later, seems WIP
check libs/func.lib.php, why replace eregi by preg_match
fix index.php.. list of features should be a single multiline translation that gets auto-unrolled with <li>$line</line>
fix index.php.. the Download/plugins/skins text is overlayed and screws up the image a bit when its hovered (stylesheet issue for my browser?)
fix features.php.. same solution as translations.php and index.php
clean developer.php and remove donation
fix poll_results.php .. typo POLL and not POOL
in linux-downloads.php, fix typo s/INDEPENT/INDEPENDENT/
in linux-downloads.php, the source tarball notice disappeared. readd!
in linux-downloads.php, fix date of tarball to become universal
clean linux-downloads.php
fix skins.php

The system for database translation should be like this :
we keep getting the default key as english, but we'd have one additional table for translations. All tables use an 'id' as the primary key, so we'll use that to our advantage.. let's take for example the 'amsn_poll' database, we would leave it as it is, and do :
SELECT id, question FROM amsn_poll..
then we would do :
SELECT translation FROM amsn_translations WHERE id = $id AND lang = $lang_code AND type = "poll_question"
if we get something, we use that translation instead, if we don't, we keep the default english translation.
So our new amsn_translations table would have 4 columns :
id, type, lang, translation
with the primary key being the tuple (id, type, lang).

In that table we would have translations for (the 'type' column) : poll_question, poll_answer, skin, plugin, news_title, news_text

This makes it much more robust because we always have a value to fallback to, it also does not require modifying the database for every language.. and also, because this is a database, we don't create a column for each language!!! we create a column called 'lang' and put the value in there!!!

How I would see it is that we should be able to later have some way to dump the untranslated stuff, like use an SQL SELECT with a JOIN to quickly find all untranslated keys for a specific language...  and automatically generate the 'source xml' where we would only have :
id, original text, translation
and automatically generate a comment in the xml like <--? TODO: untranslated key --?> so that translaters can quickly edit the xml file

Note that they're not all critics, some are just personal notes like "clean this file" because I was lazy to clean it so I want to do it later and don't want to forget... or like why you replaced date by strftime, i'll need to check the php doc to understand the difference, so you don't have to do anything for those points...
However, I really didn't like the way you made the database change.. I believe you may not have a lot of experience with databases, that's why... as a general rule.. once you design your database.. you NEVER change it.. the "alter table" commands are just there to help in case of some big mistake, but they should never be used once the database is finished and runnning.
So I wrote  a different design which should be also pretty fairly simple to implement and which will be much much better design. I've written my ideas on the design in that todo file too, so you could have a look and work on it.
Hopefully, tomorrow, if we fix all this, I'll try to get the website running so we can test it a little!
And once we announce 0.98.1, everyone will be able to enjoy the new multilangual website! :)

Gotta sleep now.. good night!

Hi,
I hope you get better soon, but don't worry, if you're sick, I can take care of finishing it up.
1 - I know, I was just talking about the change, why amsn.com (in my version amsn-project.net) was added to the cookies thingy, I have no idea what that does or how cookies work, so it was a personal reminder to check later
2 - cool
3 - yeah, I guessed that much, I'll just have to check the php manual of those functions to see how they're used in order to properly review your code.
4 - would be nice, thanks!
5 - I see.. but I know nothing about stylesheets, so I'm just wondering what each little thing does, I'll probably delegate this to someone who knows (for reviewing the code before merging). the thing that seemed weird to me is the changes to the width/height by many pixels to some elements (which I have no idea what they are).
6 - nah, there's no reason to do it now, I'll do it later once the whole site is finished, there's no point in changing the site's content while we're doing this... + again, a personal note
7 - because it's useless, we had 2 donations of 5$ each in 5 or 6 years, and now we have ads on the website, so there's no point in wasting space with a donate link if it's useless and we get money from somewhere else anyways! again, that was just a personal note.
8 - hehe, i didn't even read the code since you told me it was WIP, so I just left it there, again this was a personal note to "check later when it's done" so I don't merge that stuff thinking i've read it while in fact I skipped it.
9 - ah ok, thx for info.. I would have found it, again this was a personal note to 'check later' because I didn't have much time :)
10 - ok, sure
11 - I use Opera 9.62.. when the mouse is hoevered, you get the image AND the text.. that's the annoying part with the stylesheets, we have to make sure it works for all major browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera). we've had to play so much with stylesheets before just to get the main page to display correctly in all of them, it was crazy!
12 - cool :)
13 - great, thx
14 - Cool! I'll have a look at the code tonight
15 - great!
16 - thank youu!! :)
17 - cool.. I had a quick look, I think I may have screwed up the 'Features' page.. it shows a big 'echo' .. I have the same on the local copy I sent you, so this was my fault, sorry.. I'll fix it tonight too!

anyways, thanks a lot for all the hard work, now you're sick, so you should really get some rest, stay in bed and relax in order to get better.. you've done a tremendous job, and I can take care of the rest. You don't need to worry!

Thanks again, and take care! :)

Hi,
11. - what about using a span element within the <a> and add this to css:
Code:
a#download:hover
{
  background: transparent url(images/download_hover.png) no-repeat
}

a#download:hover span
{
  visibility:hidden;
}
still needs to be tested for Safari and Opera
(@sabit ertan: transparent doesn't seems to be a valid color-value in CSS standard)

for a#downloads a#plugins a#skins I would say height: 35px; should be 45px

anybody already thought about what to do if a translation doesn't fit into the corresponding "button"?

by the way: the "Download aMSN" button has an other border on the not hovered image. Is that by design?

oh, I forgot to say.. when I say "clean file X", it's for changing the echo 'lots of stuff'.TRANS.'lots of other stuff' into 'lots of stuff <?php echo TRANS ?> 'lots of other stuff', but it's not always necessary.. only for small, few one liners, for example, the developer page does not need to be cleaned, on the contrary, it would make it worse, so.. just an FYI :)

@BW: I don't know, I'm a CSS n00b.. and I don't know much about all this stuff, so... maybe someone else could answer that!

Hello,

I don't really follow the topic (not the time :-(),

Quote from: "kakaroto"
Code:
<?php echo '<br/><br/><li><ul><blablabla><a uri=http&#58;//foo.bar>'._SOME_TRANS.'</a></ul></li><etc>'?>

I prefered :
Code:
<br/><br/><li><ul><blablabla><a uri=http://foo.bar><?php echo _SOME_TRANS?> </a></ul></li><etc>

Just for the code lisibility, you can use that :
Code:
<br/><br/><li><ul><blablabla><a uri=http://foo.bar><?= _SOME_TRANS ?> </a></ul></li><etc>

Less text to write, more easy to understand when you read ;)

Else, good job boys !

hey Anael, thanks for suggestion. i used your suggestion and edited all files and uploaded amsn.tar.gz on demo site(i edited it from svn repository). also stylesheet.css file edited and tested(it is valid now)on Firefox(3.5.4), Opera(9.6 and 10), Safari4, Google chrome.

Hi sabit ertan,

I've just tried you css change with IE6 & IE7 to make sure it works also there,
sadly IE shows the text still in tiny blue letters when hovered (white when already visited).
we could reduce the effect by putting an appropriate color for hover according to the image,
but you'll probably still see it...

btw. here (http://wbwb.lima-city.de/aMSN/next_hover.html) I changed the border thing on the 'Download aMSN' button in the 2nd line
 just to make clear what I talked about in my last post;
so is that by design or just a png-compression mistake?

take care

Hi, I tried on opera 9.6 and it works! Thanks BW for reporting the issue with IE, and for fixing the download button.. I had checked and understood what you meant but forgot to reply.. yes, it just looks like a defect, it's definitely not by design :)
@nicolunacba: translating to spanish would be extremely appreciated, spanish is one of the important languages that we need, so if you could do it as soon as possible, that would be awesome, so hopefully, we can put up the new website very very soon! :)
Thanks all for their contributions and especially sabit_ertan :)

p.s.: I'll have a look at the new changes soon and commit them. thx

@kakaroto: Send me the file or I "translate in a plain text file" each page?

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: kakaroto on November 03, 2009, 06:11:59 pm
@nicolunacba: just grab the archive from sabit_ertan's website and edit the file includes/languages/es/es.php or you can grab it here :
http://amsn.svn.sf.net/viewvc/amsn/trunk/www/includes/languages/es/es.php?revision=11732&view=markup
Modify it and upload it somewhere!

@sabit_ertan: by the way, since the default (english) language is included before the alternate language (spanish for example), then the language php files should not define untranslated strings, this way, it's easy to check which sentences were translated and which ones aren't. I'll fix that on svn later.

I need the meanning of:
Timestamp (a feature)
amsn-lang (the name of the mailing list)

and your own-definition of "tarball"

I expect to finish it today xD.

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: kakaroto on November 03, 2009, 08:04:43 pm
You can have a look at amsn's langes translation for more information :
timestamp is translated as :
timestamp Marca de tiempo
timestamps Activar hora en los mensajes

and for amsn-lang mailing list, it's a mailing list called 'amsn-lang' (amsn-lang AT lists.sourceforge.net) google translate says mailing list is "lista de correo"
and for 'tarball', it just means a .tar.gz file, you can translate it as "archive" or "package" or something like that...
I hope that helps!
Thanks! :)

hi nicolunacba. thanks for translation. but we cannot reach it this way(by clicking http://justseewhatcanewdo.99k.org/public/es.php). please archive it or just change name es.ph_ something like that. There is also an xml file on this link aMSN site default language pack(included en.php) (http://yavhehe.byethost16.com/) . If you have enough time please look at that.

I was thinking something important. I was using chars like "ñ" or "á", "é", "í", "ó" and "ú", but can PHP parse it? Will I replace, for example, the ñ for &ntilde; ñ   or &#xF1; ?

Now I am translating the news. I only translated 1 but all the info about plugins and skins are ready. I hope to finish it before Christmas, err I mean Saturday

you can directly use your characters. i add a read me file into en.tar.gz you can follow it. the key is you have to save your file with UTF8 character encoding.

Post by: kakaroto on November 05, 2009, 01:14:26 am
hey, the website is now ready!
You can check it out, test it, and make sure *everything* is correct and working :
http://amsn-project.net/new-www/

@nicolunacba: we still need the es.php file (but rename the extension, otherwise your server executes it and we can't see its content)
@sabit_ertan: it looks like the dates for the news are not translated for turkish...
Also, I noticed that in the download.php page, the date of the svn tarball is bad, in french it says '(Capture SVN du Le 4 novembre 2009 @ 02:01:08)' which is like saying "SVN capture of the The 4th of November", first there's the upper case 'Le' but also the 'du' breaks it, in french, you can't say "of the" as "de le", when "le" follows "de", it becomes "du", so the translation is correct, but there's the additional "Le" from the date.. it looks like the date format was designed specifically for the news, not for that kind of date...
Also Sabit, the translation for the news in turkish is not correct, the last news item doesn't have any newlines.. the one before doesn't seem to have spaces between the text and the links in it.. make sure the formatting is correct!

That's all I've noticed so far.

p.s.: the website shows only 3 news items, so there's no need to translate old news, especially considering that once the new website is up, we'll post a news item about the multilanguage site, and then one about the 0.98.1 release... so only the last news item needs to be translated.

Hi, I'm still here if you need help with Spanish translation.
Thank you sabit ertan, kakaroto and nicolunacba for your work.

if you could check nicolunacba's tranlation we would appriciate .
Quote from: "kakaroto"
it looks like the dates for the news are not translated for turkish...

it is server-side problem. you have to add language-base-tr to your server.
For date in SVN explanation we can add new variable in strftime function and can add new definition to xx.php
Quote from: "kakaroto"
Also Sabit, the translation for the news in turkish is not correct, the last news item doesn't have any newlines.. the one before doesn't seem to have spaces between the text and the links in it.. make sure the formatting is correct!

Thanks for attention. i will complete translation with right format today.
and if you add new news we can add them into translation.

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: kakaroto on November 05, 2009, 05:38:09 pm
alright! It wasn't easy but I added the spanish translation!
thanks nicolunacba.. but it was quite annoying.. I had a hard time figuring out the encoding of es.php but then I found out it was "Mac OS Roman", and then I used the 'iconv' command to transform it into utf-8, so yeay! I also added teh xml into the database, which was also quite annoying because :
1 - you had a few '&quot' instead of '&quot;' (missing ';' caused the xml to be invalid)
2 - you had a lot of '<lang>es<lang>' instead of '<lang>es</lang>' (tag mismatch) which caused the xml to be invalid a hundred times
3 - you had everything use 'trans_type' in the XML instead of 'type' which made the database invalid...
I suppose the original XML you worked with had some of these issues (especially trans_type).
So anyways, it's now updated and spanish seems to be working pretty good!

@sabit_ertan: thanks, I couldn't find a language-base-tr in the debian repository, but then I figured it out, just installing the turkish (and spanish) locale fixed it : dpkg-reconfigure locales :)

So now the only thing remaining is :
1 - fix the translations (spanish too!) because the news format is wrong (missing newlines, text and links glued together)
2 - Add a new date format to differenciate between the news date and the svn tarball date.

Hi guys,
I'm gonna review my french translation cause there are some mistakes and some things pretty ... ugly ^^
I'll also translate the news and plugins if i have the time.
For the date format, i propose for the french translation to put "3 Août 2008" for example, i mean to remove that useless and ugly  "Le" (it'll also solve the tarball date issue by the way).
I think i said everything i had to say ...

Excellent job sabit_eran, kakaroto, nicolunacba and you guys !

@nicolunacba : are you sure your translation is correct in all spanish  dialects ? I mean are you sure you didn't put any word or anything specific to Argentina ? I'm not a spanish expert at ALL, just to make sure, it's a common mistake for south america spanish speakers (i have a classmate from Paraguay who always does a LOT of mistakes in spanish that's why i ask xD)

@Kakaroto : met le français avant l'espagnol  dans la liste des langues

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: nicolunacba on November 05, 2009, 09:46:38 pm
@arantes: I tried to make it in "neutro" spanish, using primary dialects like Chile or Mexico. Maybe, this is an Latinamerican Spanish. But, for example, in Argentina we use the you as "vos" and not "tu". I used "tu". Also, in Argentina and others LA countries we say "You Can" as "Podés", with the second person as "tu" it's "Tu puedes" o "Puedes". I used "Puedes".
And It's not a common mistake from south america ¬¬". Spain doesn't have the original or neutral spanish, so they make mistakes too. I will not going to say "Vosotros podéis", It's more popular and easy say "Ustedes pueden" or "Pueden".
In that case, in aMSN forum I should put: "¿Qué característica QUERÉS en el aMSN?" or when I say "Para la lista completa, ve a la página de características. ¡Puedes obtener más mediante plugins, o también cambiar totalmente su apariencia con skins!" instead, in Argentinian, I will say "Para la lista completa, andá a a la parte de las características. ¡Podés conseguir más con los plugin, o podés también cambiar toda su apariencia con los skins!"
Sorry about my character now, but how we speak different South American countries, and Spain saying us we speak wrong, is the main reason for discrimination in the Internet. I tryed to do a good work, to prevent this.

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: kakaroto on November 05, 2009, 10:21:54 pm
hehe, cool arantes, yes we need new trans for french, some things are just weird (like the disclaimer at the bottom of the pages!) and it's not really complete (the text behind the buttons is not yet translated).. I'll remove the "Le", I think it's a good idea.
@nicolunacba: the latest SVN contains the fixed es.php and amsn_translations.xml for spanish, so you can use those and fix what you want from there...

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: arantes on November 05, 2009, 10:22:41 pm
@nicolunacba : Oh sorry if i sounded like i was insulting you   that was totally not my point.
Of course you're right, Spanish spanish is not neutral spanish, like british english is not standard english. They do mistakes to, and dialects from some regions of spain are totally strange, more different from neutral spanish that south american dialects are. I have a friend from Galicia who always put words in Gallego in her spanish x)
There is no "wrong" dialect, just different dialects, like british english is different from american english, and none of them is wrong. I asked without reading all your translation and even if i did my level of spanish is not good enough at all to see this. And by "mistake" i meant mistake when trying to speak standard spanish, cause in standard spanish it is a mistake to say "Podés", like it is a mistake to use "ain't" in standard English.

(BTW, for your "vosotros podéis" thing, a spanish will not say that most of the time but "podéis" only instead which is more popular in most spanish dialects and as easy as "Pueden" ^^)

@Kakaroto : Yeah .. It is weird indeed. But the plugin page is worse ..

Hello,

On http://www.amsn-project.net/new-www/translations.php "Error: Unable to open langlist file "
No problem from the original website.
Maybe the file isn't copy ?

The Pools / feedback content isn't translated.

"Aidez SVP" may be translated by "Nous soutenir" which is less "petit nègre" ;-)

The W3C backlink is beautiful, but not true -> http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amsn-project.net%2Fnew-www%2Fdeveloper.php;accept=text%2Fhtml%2Capplication%2Fxhtml%2Bxml%2Capplication%2Fxml%3Bq%3D0.9%2C*%2F*%3Bq%3D0.8;accept-language=fr%2Cfr-fr%3Bq%3D0.5;accept-charset=ISO-8859-1%2Cutf-8%3Bq%3D0.7%2C*%3Bq%3D0.7

I can help to resolve that if needed, just ask :-)

@nicolunacba: alexandernst is now reviewing the spanish translation and fixing it to be more neutral (I think).. you could review the changes once I get them, then you can fight it off! :p
@Anael: ok, I fixed the unable to open langlist file...
about the "pools/feedback" (you mean polls/news?), they're not entirely translated.. they are in spanish, some of them in turkish, in french not yet...
good point on the "Nous soutenir".

About that W3C thing, I don't really understand much from it, but the errors seem to be about the '&type=2' in a URL, it shouldn't parse the URL... it's weird! anyways, if you know how to fix that, let me know!

@kakaroto and other admins: It will be cool if we can have now site maintainers for each language. Billiob and you speak are the main admin, also french and english website mantainer  (also the other languages). But now, I think we need other people who can modify the folder for each new language. Some spanish talkers for includes/languages/es (and only the files of this folder), others for turkish (idk how is, sorry) includes/languages/tr, and all other new languages. It will be cool for update quickly with all new changes in the site :).
(I'm not saying I'll be a Spanish Mantainer, I was thinking for the good of the website)

svn access can't be limited to one directory, it's everything or nothing (includes main amsn svn, not just website), so no... there's a system in place for that stuff, look at amsn-project.net/translations.php

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site
Post by: arantes on November 06, 2009, 04:23:16 am
And why don't we put a PHP admin page with identification so that you can choose what can everyone edit ?

@arantes: nice idea :)

Title: Multilanguage amsn Web site

arantes: look at the CREDITS file to see who does translations, you think we want (or even have time) to create an account for everyone? and the admin system controls everything anyways, there's no 'only access to ...' system, and I don't plan on writing that.. but anyways, like I said, there's already a system in place, so I don't see what the problem is.
@nicolunacba: not keep submiting like before.. before (now) it's through the forums, which is crap indeed, and only because we want this to go fast and get the site up and running quickly, but afterwards, it would have to be using the amsn-lang mailing list.. and there are already other translators that are used to that system that can take care of it.

Hi all,

BaaaZen and I have translated the Webpage into German
he did the de.php and most of the plugins
I fixed some typos and finished the rest;
it's not the final version, but I think it's good enough for the launch of the Multilanguage Page
so maybe kakaroto can but it on the testpage
I also fixed some typos in the en.php (used SVN 11761 version)

here is the file
www.file-upload.net/download-1996724/amsn-page.tgz.html

btw.
1. in the english amsn_translations.xml on SVN in Skin id 26 there is some turkish text after <translation>
2. while translating the Skins, I've noticed that the download-link to Parti-Pirate is broken
3. I had the idea of lang depending WIKI and FAQ links, how about that?

Hey BW, thanks for the german translation (thanks BaaaZen too!)
Anyways, let's get to business, I need some more help from you guys.. I've just added maemo 5 (N900) packages for aMSN and added a new page for it! Have a look here  :
http://www.amsn-project.net/new-www/maemo-downloads.php (check also download.php for the link to this page), as you obviously all noticed, it's CRAP! So I need someone with html knowledge to figure out how to put up a nice page! no screenshots bigger than the page, and change the text a little to be better, etc...
I'll also need the news to be translated, for now, I have no news! So feel free to post suggestions for what to write for announcing the new multilanguage website!
Thanks!

3. I try to solve maemo's pictures size problem used some small html code
4. I changed maemo-download.png(i add alpha channel with gimp(it is need to refix, cause i am not expert), because it is looking bad when you hover on it)
5. default amsn_translation.xml(in English) fixed/cleaned
6. All changes added my amsn.tar.gz file you can download here (http://yavhehe.byethost16.com/)

and also played a bit with the screenshots, hope you like it
Here (http://wbwb.lima-city.de/aMSN/maemo.htm) are the examples.

btw
I think we shouldn't use the same png for download.php and maemo-downloads.php

Hi Sabit,
Thanks for the latest changes!
note: you should not add untranslated definitions to other files because :
1 - untranslated stuff is already automatically taken from english
2 - if you do this, we won't be able to write a script that find the untranslated keys so translators know what to translate
Thanks for the maemo page fixes! now if someone could make it 'better'! The formatting is good thanks to Sabit, but I think it's lacking text, something nicer for users who go there..
anyways, I think it's fine as it is already, so that's good :) but I hope we can improve it later! for now, it's enough to be able to release it! :D

@BW: thanks to made transparency better, but i think your new screenshots looks like a nokia advertisement :)
@kakaroto: 1- you have a mistake: only untranslated sql part is taken from English. So we can work to take English definitions either
2- you are right, sorry for that
And the other thing is why we dont use screenshots script for maemo pictures?

Hey,
@Bw, oh, sorry, I didn't see your post, you posted at the same time as me.. those screenshots are AWESOME! I wanted something like that, but didn't think someone could do it! :)
anyways, I'm not really sure if we should use them, the images become low quality because the resolution has to go down (because the website's width is fixed), and I want people to see how the screenshots really look.. But I'd definitely put one of those at the top instead of the download-maemo.png! I like the one with the device facing right, if you could do it with the contact list screenshot that would be awesome!

@sabit_ertan: ouch, you were right, I thought it was done for the php files too! anyways, I've now fixed it so english is taken by default, thanks for noticing!
About screenshots page, we probably should and probably wil... eventually.. I was just lazy, and I want to get this done as soon as possible!

Hi kakaroto,

my idea was to click on them to get the normal screenshot, but anyway
the contact list gets really small with the one were the device is facing right and
I don't like the censored email on the contact list, so maybe it's not the
ideal replacement for download-maemo.png like this.

Can you set the font size there easily? Otherwise I'll just try and fix it with gimp

After I've made these images, I thought about the legal issues using the pictures
from nokia like this; don't want that you guys get in trouble...

Humm.. we could probably ask them, I don't think they'd say no, but I they still might.. I guess we should just keep it as it is right now, and ask them, if they answer ok, then we'll try something out.
thanks

I've written them a general request about that, without mentioning anything about the project
just to see what they say about it

That's cool, you finally did it! I could add an Italian translation too. Is there a little website translation howto such as "go here, download php source, send the file to johndoe"?

Yep, I think Italian is too important. Italia has a lot of users :). So, if you want to start now, go to http://amsn.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/amsn/trunk/www/includes/languages/, download the "en" english folder. Save it as "it" (for Italian I think) and translate the two files.
Remember to change the tags <lang>en</lang> to <lang>it</lang> :P.
Then send the files (in the folder "it"), to the email for translations (see http://www.amsn-project.net/translations.php).

Good luck :D

hey, the new website is up! and 0.98.1 is made official.. the new news items need to be translated too. (a new poll will be added soon too).
the amsn_translations.xml is not yet updated with the latest news items, I guess we need to write a script that dumps the database for a translation language...

Thank you for sparing me some time browsing this topic! :P I'll begin working on it soon. I heard many Italians are switching to aMSN 0.98.1 from Emesene, but it still has a lot of users. Somehow, they believe Emesene and aMSN will merge in a single software in the future... but that's another story!

Congratulations! :D More than one year has passed since last update. The upgraded layout is great, too.
So, maybe I should be waiting for an update to amsn_translations.xml before translating.

Hi guys,

for German and Spanish (de & es) the preview of the screenshots on screenshots.php won't appear, and the link shows this:
Code:
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /var/www/includes/languages/de/de.php:1) in /var/www/getURL.php on line 15
Your web browser should have redirected you automatically. If not, please click here.

Hi guys,
just to finish up with the maemo pictures issue; I finally got a response from Nokia:
Quote from: "Press.Services@nokia.com"
Dear Sir,

The photos on Nokia Press site are meant for press usage and we do not allow any altering of them.

Sorry for not being able to help.

Kind regards,
Reija
Nokia, Press Services

already the picture on download.php could be called altered, so ...
I didn't find another good place to ask for pictures for this usage, so I'll leave it for now.
If anybody wants to keep up and Nokia changed there opinion, please let me know.

If you need it, I made a Nokia Maemo icon for the download page:

hi people,
why there is no more recent post on website? are there any possibilities for contact to smf?

We just decided to remove it, we have it working for SMF, but the number of website visits is too big and it causes mysqld to use 100% CPU trying to find the recent posts for every user visiting the website... Problem is that the database isn't optimized for a request like that, that's why...
we may reenable it in the future when we implement some memcaching or something... maybe, generate a static page for the latest posts that gets generated once per 5 minutes or something.
