Title: MSN Censorship
Post by: dr frankenstein on December 29, 2005, 06:21:03 am
Hi. Many of you knows that every message containing *download.php* is blocked by MSN servers...

I just want to know if there are other things that are censored, and if anybody knows, WHY? If it's a virus protection it's a really stupid way to do it, and I don't think *download.htm* is blocked, si it doesn't make any sense...

php can be used to create dynamic sites, where as html is more likely to be something static......everyone knows that, I dont know why I'm saying it....

but yeah, i guess they dont want dumb ass users to download viruses, but it would have been neater if the user could select if she/he wants to have filtering on/off.

also asp pages are dynamic but... what is wrong? download.asp is not blocked!!
anyway I have some problem sending a little avi file! the first time the transfer started but after some seconds stalled! I tried to resend the file but didn't start at all! is MY problem (eg. I'm stupid and I'm not able to configure the firewall) or YOU too? I suspect that uncle Bill is monitoring all transfers ;DDD!

It's stupid in my opinion, because someone could just name their page read.php or anything instead of download and it'll still work.  Another thing though, anything containing ".pif" gets blocked as well.  I got it off a french forum

edit: ps. I just emailed msn messenger tech support and asked for a list.  My first time talking to them; I wonder how helpful they'll be.

Seems they just wanted to prevent a virus from spreading. The virus probably told you "hey go to this cool page" or something...

Alright, I got a reply back from msn:

Quote
Based on the information I received, I understand that you have
discovered that MSN Messenger blocks messages containing "download
php." You want to know what other banned words. I apologize for the
inconvenience this has caused you. Please know that I will help you
with this issue. There is no word filtering feature in MSN Messenger.
You can send any text in an instant message, unless your contact is
using a third party application that supports this feature. However,
if you are transferring files through MSN Messenger, the following
types of files are blocked by MSN Messenger:ade, adp, app, asp, bas,
bat, cer, chm, cmd, com, cpl, crt, csh, exe, fxp, hlp, hta, inf, ins,
isp, its, js, jse, ksh, lnk, mad, maf, mag, mam, maq, mar, mas, mat,
mau, mav, maw, mda, mdb, mde, mdt, mdw, mdz, msc, msi, msp, mst

Seems the tech support doesn't know about this?  I wonder what's going on...

tec supports never know anything. I cant rember the website i emailed telling them about a exploit in there code but all they did was email me back something like this.

Thank you for the email all problems can be fixed follwing the guides here.

www.blahblah.com/faq.php

And another time I rang up my ISP to change my service to a static IP and no one knew what it was. They redirect to to my telephon provider and they were like

Internet Protcal you want to change it, Isnt that Illegal?

I couldnt be bothred trying to explain it to every one they redirected me to so i just changed ISP to one that has it by defult.

Remember, when you're calling tech support, it's actually only "tech" support.

Title: MSN Censorship
Post by: kakaroto on January 11, 2006, 09:28:00 pm
haha, yeah, 'tech' support... should be called 'bot support'.. I actually had to write to them a few times before I get my address unbanned.. humm, yeah, when I was creating all that 'who banned you detector' feature in amsn, I had a way to poll each user.. I used it by opening a chat with every offline contact, every 30secs... seemed to work, did some testings... then, when I committed, after a 1 or 2 hour polling, my address waas blocked (and burger's address.. ) then we removed the feature until I fixed that (poll every 5 minutes using the same SB, as in a multi conversation).. anyways, by opening so many chat conversations, the M$ servers detected me as being a 'spam attacker' (you know, when you get thousands of chat windows opening from people you don't have on your list, telling you to visit a site, and they close the convo?) so my mail was blocked... I emails M$ to say 'I'm not a spammer, can I get my account unbanned'.. took me a month of back and forth with emails with them.. they were saying "make sure you're connected, verify your firewall allows msn application, etc..." I had to explain 100 times that I AM A GEEK!! (lol), I get the answer "500" from the NS, and everything, explaiined it so much... after I think 5 emails/replies they finally 'talked to me'.. before it was just something like an automated bot searching for patterns in my email and answering common FAQ questions out of the patterns it found, like "can't connect", it answer "please check your internet... ISP... firewall.. blabla"...
then, I had to make the tech guy understand the problem, then make him understand the problem, then make him understand that he didn't understand the problem, then make him redirect me to the 'technical guys', then do the same thing over again, then I got my account back..
2 or 3 days later, I realised that polling each 5 minutes would make my account banned again... been 3+ years, I never had the courage to ask them to re-enable my account :P

how smart are these guys ?

i had the same experience with them too ..a while ago when i decided to be 100% linux user( and deleting my winxp) from my comp. since outlook express doesnt work in linux, i wanted to use other mail clients( i had thunderbird in mind). So i looked everywhere in their website but all i could see was outlook express and microsoft outlook. So, i wrote them an email, asking if i could use mail clients other than those two. After checking my inbox every half an hour for two days i got a reply that looked like computer generated and it had absolutely nothing about my question.

Man, i was furious ..two days later, they sent me another email asking if i was satisfied with the answers they gave me ..if there was a grade lower than F, i would have given them ..i gave them F in everything and wrote a very long explanation why i gave them that ..then i moved to gmail ..but i still use it for chatting ..and thats why i am still using amsn :D ..i didnt know they could ban email accounts ..i glad they didnt ban mine .. :D  :D  :D

micro$ucks ..ups :?  microsoft!!

Hi!

Just wanted to tell that ".scr" is being censored too. (screensaver files)
I have 2 msn accounts so sometimes i log in to both and try to find censored words

Does microsucks really say that there is no censorship?? Thats unbelieveable... so low.

Oh i forgot! Someone in another thread noticed that ".pif" is censored too

Title: MSN Censorship
Post by: qbasic fan on May 14, 2006, 01:39:02 pm
one of the most weirds blocks ive seen is that my ISP dont allow me to upload files called readme.txt to my website.

Title: MSN Censorship
Post by: kakaroto on May 14, 2006, 06:06:47 pm
lol
readme.txt!!! it doesn't even have an executable extension... did you try to find out why ?

p.s: .scr was already known, but it was said in another thread : http://amsn.sourceforge.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=692&highlight=scr
thanks about .pif, we didn't know it was also censored (or I didn't).

Title: MSN Censorship
Post by: qbasic fan on May 15, 2006, 06:53:40 pm
I tried README.TXT once again, and this block seems absolutely useless.
Actually, they neither block me from upload readme.txt, or download it from my site directly by the url in the browser.
But they make the file invisible in that index file that the server creates automatic.

http://web.telia.com/~u89107348/qb/ - index file. no readme.txt

http://web.telia.com/~u89107348/qb/README.TXT - direct url. readme.txt is there!!

Propably they try to make life hard for software sharers or programmers or companies or whatever...
But only those who have no index.htm or similar

Title: MSN Censorship
Post by: kakaroto on May 16, 2006, 06:05:30 pm
yeah, it's usually a bot searching for patterns in your mail, you'll probably get an email saying "make sure you are connected to internet... make sure your status is not set to appear offline"... lol
and I think someone already bothered them until he got an answer (I think a human will read your mail if you reply to this bot 3 or 4 times...) and they only said "no, there is no censorship"

P2M = Peer to Mail.

all know the P2P, but in 2005, was created the P2M, you can upload a file on your mail accopunt (gmail, yahoo, tec) mails with space > 1GB, then, you ecrypt tu pass, and share it, so, any user can use the P2M app, to connect toy you account, using the encrypt pass, the program only can display the mails, you can not review the mails, you can not review options and setting... ony the inbox, so, you can donwload with P2M donwload manager, so, donwload movies, apps, document, etc from directly mails server (as gmail). without interruptions, without waiting, and the transfer is same to your bandwith...

ok... but P2M, has a bug... you don't need be a programer, a guru... nop... only a litle thing to do, and in little 15 steps, you can steal any gmail account, and donwload the movie or anything without problem.

kakaroto, if you want know the P2M bug, PM me, i think that in a week, i'will send the bug to security bolletins (as hispasec)

btw, the bug has a year still i found it!!

When I heard of it I just thought that really the "p2m" thing is unsafe by design...

You're actually giving away your password, and it's obvious the client would decrypt it someway to login... they're not giving you any answers or feedback from Google because you're just not supposed to use an email account as a storage/sharing virtual device.

I'm not sure if this practice is against the gmail TOS at all ;) and so ignoring your report would be actually a favor to you, as if I'm right they should/would deactivate your address. ;)

bye

Your rights! but, the problem is beyond gmail, someone can changes your gmail account information to do ilegal operations, they (gmail) block yuor access account for 1 day if you has more than limit data transfer, but what happen if anyone steal your gmail account and do ilegal acts? yes, is user's fault for give the password, include encrypt, but the point... with little steps you can acces to all google services.

P2M should be fix in futrures releases, but, if you have a version not patched.. the bug is still ther... then google should be patch too... i think!  :D

BTW.... aMSN is greats!

I don't think so. It's not they're fault if you do something harmful with their services. I mean, would you sue Ford for losing your car, if you gave away your keys? ;)

let's come back in topic.
One way to leapfrog "censored" urls is using %nn codes in URLs
for instace %2e is the code for "."
so if you want to show your friend a link to your gallery, just use:
http://www.mysite.com/gallery%2ephp
it should work :)

Added to latest SVN.

I am just substituting the dot in fact, but it works :D You won't notice anything locally, you will see the dot, just the remote user will see the %2E instead.

Thanx NoWhereMan !

so.. as you can see, there's a whole lot in there.. what really surprised me is the 'tufoto', that means anyone speaking spanish, if he makes a typo and writes 'tufoto' instead of 'tu foto' he'll just get his conversation closed without any 'reason' behind it...
stupid M$...

For the interested, I just wrote a little code to directly get the censorship list from the servers, here's the result :

I'm very interested as I'm trying to maintain a kind of anti-filter filter script for MSN Plus. Can you please elaborate on how you got this list?

in the main window, press Ctrl-S for the status window and in the bottom type :
Code:
getCensoredWords

read about the GCF protocol command in http://msnpiki.msnfanatic.com/index.php/MSNP11:Changes#GCF
The censored words are in the xml received, under the 'path' : "config:block:regexp:imtext"

Thanx. It seems there is missing some characters at the end of each line

I don't know allot about the MSNP protocol or how to use it. Is there a way of running the protocol commands from amsn? Is there any tools for experimenting with MSNP? Could you please point me to some source files for examples?

I found
Code:
proc getCensoredWords { } {
    catch {::MSN::WriteSB ns GCF Shields.xml}
}

in protocol.tcl, but unfortunately I don't know tcl. Where is Shields.xml parsed?[/quote]

Hi Voxar. I don't there is a missing character at the end, I think that the regexp is meant to match only that part, so 930le.com or 930le.col would match...
You can send MSNP command using the Tcl command :
Code:
::MSN::WriteSB ns COMMAND PARAMETERS

like you can see above. you must be connected first. If you send a wrong command, then you will be disconnected from the server.
The Shields.xml is being received in response to the GCF command, so if you search protocol.tcl for the handler of "GCF" (just search for "GCF") you'll see where it's parsed.
You can do Ctrl-Shift-C from the main window to get a 'proper' Tcl console, and you can do Ctrl-D for the protocol log.
About tcl/tk you have great man pages at http://tcl.tk
and you can read one of my tutorials on fully understanding tcl/tk at : http://www.amsn-project.net/wiki/Dev:TclTk_Tutorial
Don't forget to read the msnpiki about the protocol...
have fun.

I just noticed something...

If you send a link in this example:
www.vim.org/download.php

it would of course not be delivered...

but if you strip away the www. and send it as:
vim.org/download.php it will reach the other user...

hehe, they don't like the ".info" in it I suppose.. which is just stupid! the transportation system in montreal is on http://stm.info
If you want, you can write a plugin that uses the commands I've shown previously to get the list of the regexps that are censored, then use a little "trick" to uncensor them...
(the trick is.. if the page download.php is censored, then download%2Ephp isn't and once opened in a browser, the %2E transforms into a '.' so basically.. urlencode one of the letters in the URL... )

Just so you know, the "getCensoredWords" function is broken in MSNP15, it causes you to disconnect.
Also, it seems to be truncating the last few letters of the censored words. I got the shields.xml file manually and manually Base64-decoded them, and the whole filename is there, but aMSN only shows eg. ".e" instead of ".exe". :P

humm... you don't need to call that anymore, you will get the list automatically as soon as you sign in...

Oh, alright. Well I ended up grabbing the list manually anyways :P
