Hi,

yesterday I decided to update my aMSN.app to the latest version (0.98.1, before I had the 0.98beta 4(?, don't remember if it really was beta 4) from notjustanothermacuser.com, which is down atm -.-).

As always I then updated to the latest SVN (11953).

Now I have 2 Problems:

1. aMSN lags all the time when sending messages and uses a lot of CPU time. Even the menus (in the menubar at top) are damn slow and pop up delayed.

2. The statusses of my offline buddies don't get fetched anymore. Kakarato (or whatever it's spelled Tongue ) already wrote about that problem somewhere here. He stated, that aMSN tries to get the statusses from a MSN Server. The thing is, there are multiple servers and not all of them are always up to date. In some SVN revision this was changed to a correct server and from then on I had statusses for my offline buddies. That was awesome.

EDIT: I found that thread, I replied to it back then.

Btw: The forum search really sucks Smiley
/EDIT

But now, this doesn't work anymore. I just get the cached(?, they seem to be cached because they're not up to date) nicknames without any status.
Is this issue aMSN or Microsoft related?

I really hope you can help me out. I use aMSN very often and the old version worked perfectly -.- Never change a running system, eh? ^^

I tried reverting to the 0.98beta4 (and even 0.98) and updating to the latest SVN but still had the same issues, what makes me wonder a lot.

The bad thing is, that I don't know which SVN I had before, it was about 2 or 3 weeks old, but I don't know the revision anymore.  Embarrassed

1. Try moving away your aMSN settings directory BEFORE starting aMSN, to see if this fixes anything.

2. Fetching nicknames/personal messages on login slowed down connection time a lot and even made aMSN unable to connect for some slow connections. So now it is an option in advanced preferences, disabled by default.

1. I tried that now, it works again...

Kinda cool but also pretty bad. I had my aMSN profile for about 2 years or something and therefore many custom animoticons etc. (Maybe thats the reason? ^^)

The last thing I changed on my old profile is my profile picture. I'll try to revert that to look if that helps. But thank you for your help, I'll figure out the issue by myself (or migrate my animoticons etc to the new profile, I'll fix it alone Cool )

EDIT: I now figured out that it still lags, but not as hard as before (but still very noticable). Very annoying. So this is issue still exists. I didn't test enough and posted too quick. Nevertheless the 2. thing works.

Am I the only one with this issue?
/EDIT

2. Oh, thank you. That option was disabled and I didn't know it existed, I didn't read the cia.vc updates in the last time.

Thank you for helping me out  Cheesy

I now figured out, which precess is responsible for the lag. It's the font daemon (fontd). Everytime I quickly go through through the menus of aMSN (just aMSN! No other app is affected) , fontd goes monkey (~80% CPU usage). aMSN stays calm and has just a CPU usage of about 3-4%.

I now cleared my font caches using Onyx and even rebooted, but that doesn't help neither.

lol, I now figured out what the damn error was:

Somebody in my contactlist had new nickname:
Quote
_                J Ʌ И
That screwed up EVERYTHING. lmao, now I renamed that contact and everything is smooth again.

I quoted his nick to show you which characters might make trouble.

But now I'm happy again, aMSN works again like I want it to do Smiley

Kepp up the great work!

Very good job figuring it out!! Cheers! Smiley

It is very weird though, since I've seen (and used myself) all kinds of weird characters on nick/psm and aMSN didn't act up like that. Then again, I don't have a Mac to test it. Does anyone else on a Mac have issues with weird characters on people's nicknames/personal messages?
