Same problem over here in UK. Whenever i sign in, my nick is my email, and all of my offline contacts are their email address too, instead of their last seen name.

everyone is affected by this change on the microsoft servers, it doesn't depend on your country, it will get fixed, be patient.

Hi everyone, Im new around here, Im from Mexico
Well I have the same issue, but its a bit different, you know I was wondering why would this happen, so I made a some test with a Virtual Machine and Win2, I installed the official MSN client and changed my nick, then I logged out and logged in but the nick didn't changed at all ...
I wonder if this "bug" is rather a measure "against" other message clients like amsn and many others ... like when they changed the database or something and we weren't able to log in (some time ago haha) ....
 Hope this help jeje
bye

welcome to the forums uranio23, the problem is that we can use two servers to get the nickname, amsn checks both servers and if they each have a different nickname stored in them, it takes the nickname from one of them.. luck has it that the server we took the nickname from by default was simply the one that got screwed by microsoft. It's not always a 'plot' by microsoft to kill us, sometimes it's just a bug or bad luck. this bug in their server is also affecting their own client, connect using windows live messenger and look at your offline contacts, you will see their nickname has become either their email address or their first name or first name+last name.. (whatever information they entered in their live ID account settings). it only affects the offline contacts for WLM, but it still affects it.. that's why I have good hope that they'll fix it soon.

Just looked around on the forum and saw this thread, my original post was going to be this:
Dont know if this counts as OS Specific or not but my issue is this:
Im running the OSX version of aMSN. Whenever the program signs in it switches my username/nick/personal message/display picture to one i had about 3 years ago. It's really annoying for personal reasons. I've tried just updating the software to the latest version, and I've tried removing the account through the aMSN program and still, every time I sign in, there it is, auto-changing all my personal info to an ancient reading. I would've changed my username from that when I was still using MSN on Windows, and I have changed my username many times on aMSN, I even tried changing it on eBuddy in an attempt to make it work. This is a really annoying Bug.
So people are saying it's a problem with the MSN server? That's a bugger, means it'll probably never get fixed. What a pain. Interesting that I'm getting presented with a nick from so long ago though.

@OptiMAT: there are about 20 threads in this forum about this issue.. read them, or just read my post just above yours, it explains exactly what the problem is! it's a server issue, which means microsoft will have to fix it, but it doesn't mean it will never get fixed. you could also get the SVN version of aMSN which has a workaround for this : http://amsn-project.net/wiki/SVNdon't ask questions about SVN, there are two very easy methods of getting it, just follow the step by step.

same here. If it can help, aMSN fetches my real passport profile name and presents it as nick
As someone already said, changing your personal details on Passport.net could be an easy workaround, waiting for things to get fixed again

Use the lastest development version of aMSN from SVN. It doesn't download the nick from MSN servers, it sets your nick always you log in. See how to update from here http://www.amsn-project.net/wiki/SVN

I've found that, as a temporary solution, changing the name associated to my Window$ Live ID changed the nickname that the MSN server sets every time I log in.
It worked for me. Probably someone has already figured it out (I haven't verified), but I post this here in the hope it helps.

As well it doesnt take me straight to my e-mail once i click my new messages, i have to then sign in again on the hotmail website. I dunno im finding this all new with the version update. Let me know if theres away to fix that, or if anyone is having the same issues? cheers!

1 - welcome to the forums 2 - the nick issue is explained here, read the thread correctly 3 - the chat issue seems to be as simple as an internet connection issue, fix your internet! 4 - the email issue works fine for me but someone else reported it doesn't work, no idea what's causing this though. 5 - I don't think the new version is causing any of those issues, just to be sure, try the 0.97.2 version and see for yourself.
