Hi all,

why amsn is so ugly?

every place i read that amsn is a msn messenger "clone",
only if it is a MSN Messenger 4 clone,

the message window layout is not good, and on the contact list a have a big useless banner, the contacts name is covered by his status (the status is showing on the icon at same time)

i think alvaro (or someone) have used msn messenger a long time ago on windows and is developing amsn by his old memory

Heres a Screenshot of the current msn messenger

why amsn isnt a msn7 look like?

the amsn changes contacts names with colors by status, but why it doesnt color the msgplus colored names?

amsn is the best choice on linux, so bad Sad, but i believe in it.

Hi, I'm Tom, the skin developer for amsn.
It would be nice if you could be a bit more positive, but never mind.
I am currently developing a new set of widgets for amsn so it can look nice. We have no intention of making amsn look like MSN 7 as default - although one of our developers is creating an "MSN 7" skin that will attempt to emulate the MSN7 look. Tcl/TK is difficult to make look pretty, but we are working very hard at it and acheiving good results so far, you will see the benefits in version 0.95 when it comes out.

Everyone is well aware what MSN7 looks like, no need to worry we think it still looks like windows messenger. In my opinion MSN7 is ugly. Just my opinion though..

About the banner, you can turn that off in preferences>advanced>show/hide amsn's banner. I think we should have it removed altogether or at least hidden by default, but that isnt a matter for me right now.

I hope when version 0.95 comes out you will have more positive things to say about it. We put a lot of hard work into developing this software for you, the end user, and the open source community.

Don't be so rude, instead you should consider helping the aMSN guys creating a better looking messenger.  MSN7 isn't beautiful, it's a bloated whore in fact.  aMSN isn't a beauty, but you can create new skins if you want to, and I'm sure aMSN will be better (looking)at the end.  You're that typical kind of complainer.  If you really think MSN Messenger is so much better, use it!  You can use it with wine under linux, if you dare so.  But, you're using aMSN, so be happy with what you get.  At the end, it's free (both as in "free beer" and in "free speech").  Don't tell me "But MSN Messenger is free (as in beer) too!" as that is big bullshit.  It's created to jhave people using that windows OS which costs insanely much.
So, stop complaining or help the aMSN guys!  And then IF you complain, be a bit friendly instead of this pig-talk!!!

i found that banner romoval option just a few minutes after my post but i couldnt edit it, and now amsn look better Smiley

i like amsn

the msn7 look dont need to be the default one, but even creating skins for amsn u cant make it the same, no problem, the best part is the msn features (some are missing and i know that u know)

and anonymous, i dont help amsn guys cause i'm not good enought, maybe someday

Maybe you didn't intend to offend, but disparaging comments such as...

and

...do nothing to make you seem friendly at all.

I don't have a problem with you not being able to help, but if you aren't helping amsn, dont bash it. Bear in mind that Microsoft actually write MSN, so we have to wait for their releases to see what we need to program. Therefore we will always have a disadvantage at implementing the features that the original MSN has. But Amsn also has many features that the original MSN does not, so we have to program and maintain these features as well as the standard MSN features.

By the way, haven't you posted on the amsn-devel list before? Because that's the place to make suggestions to amsn developers, not spouting your mouth off in a users forum. Kindly think before you post.

Well, in my opinion, msn 7 is pretty, but bitmaps are a huge waste of resources.
With Amsn, i'm not too worried about the look, I want something light, with most of the features (i.e.: animated pictures, what i'm listening to...blah blah blah).

Well, that's the nature of the internet and forums. I dont think jvlppm is trying to be rude anyway... By the looks of it, he expects amsn to be a complete replacement of MS's msn...

My point was is he is (I'm pretty sure) subscribed to the amsn-devel list, and so he should have posted on the list, instead of posting posts which make amsn seem crap on here.

Maybe he wasn't being rude, but at best he was moaning. A positive attitude is the way forward!

I'm a supporter of amsn, I use it on linux, heck, I'm hosting the forums for this worthy project. But, you do have to have "haters". If anything, in an odd way, it can be viewed as criticism, and also as a feature request. I wouldn't dismiss everything he said.
But there are nicer ways to go about asking for them.

Most internets dont think when they post. The internet is filled with BS anyway. Just take in the good :?

Oh, I do view it as a feature request.
If he'd read the 0.95 todo he'd see most of what he asked for is on there Smiley

Yes, it does look like MSN4/5. But that wasn't my point. My point was the way you said it seemed to be insulting/ungrateful. If that wasn't your intent, then I'm sorry for taking it the wrong way.

This is a forum to discuss amsn. But I was under the impression that you are a subscriber to the amsn devel list (because you posted there before, about the new website, if that isnt you, I apologise again). And as your post was a feature request post (in essence), then the amsn-devel list is the place you should have posted. Most developers don't have time to look on here, so there's not much point asking for features and expecting a quick reply.

And once again, my main complaint was that your post sounded very negative and 'bashing'.

I guess we should stop discussing this and move onto a more useful topic...

I think the default aMSN skin is just perfect. I tried a lot of skins before but I always return to the defaut one. It´s give me peace. However, if you like how Windows Live looks (I don´t like it) you can try this skins --> http://madkat182.deviantart.com/ that are better than the Windows Live skin in aMSN website

By the way, now that the nudge plugin was fixed I discover that the nudge in the default skin folder is awful. I moved the file placed in the nudge plugin folder to the default skin folder and worked great. Sorry for my english.

Hi pc77! This is a very old thread, and I'm not even a developer for AMSN anymore, as I don't have the time Sad But thanks for your comment Smiley Look out for AMSN2 in the future; read more here: http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/index.php?topic=5299.0
